IN ADDITION, WORK ON STAGE 11 OF THE CHINA WATER SUPPLY SCHEME IS ALSO SCHEDULED TO START THIS YEAR, FOR COMPLETION IN 1987.

STAGE OF THE PROJECT IS ESTIMATED TO COST $725 MILLION. A $21.6-MILLION CONTRACT HAS ALREADY BEEN AWARDED IN 1983 FOR THE LAYING OF A PIPELINE FROM SHEUNG SHUI TO TAU PASS.

OTHER MAJOR WORKS WILL INVOLVE CONSTRUCTION OF NEW PUMPING STATIONS AT PLOVER COVE AND AN AQUEDUCT BETWEEN PLOVER COVE RESERVOIR AND PAK KONG. ALSO AN AQUEDUCT WILL BE CONSTRUCTED FROM TAI PO TAU TO NGAU TAM MEI.

OCTOBER RETAIL SALES VALUE INDEX UP ****

THE VALUE OF RETAIL SALES FOR THE RETAIL TRADE SECTOR IN OCTOBER 1983 WAS ESTIMATED TO BE $5 084 MILLION, ACCORDING TO THE PROVISIONAL SURVEY RESULTS ISSUED BY THE CENSUS AND STATISTICS DEPARTMENT.

AT 150, THE OVERALL RETAIL SALES VALUE INDEX INCREASED BY SIX POINTS OR FOUR PER CENT WHEN COMPARED WITH SEPTEMBER 1983, AND BY 20 POINTS OR 15 PER CENT WHEN COMPARED WITH OCTOBER 1982.

THE OVERALL RETAIL SALES VOLUME INDEX, AT 107, WAS ONE POINT OR ONE PER CENT HIGHER THAN THAT FOR SEPTEMBER 1983, AND TWO POINTS OR TWO PER CENT HIGHER THAN THAT FOR OCTOBER 1982.

COMPARED WITH SEPTEMBER 1983, RETAIL SALES OF CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS INCREASED BY 21 PER CENT IN VALUE TERMS AND 19 PER CENT IN VOLUME TERMS, WHILE THOSE OF OTHER CONSUMER GOODS ROSE BY EIGHT PER CENT AND FIVE PER CENT, AND FUELS BY EIGHT PER CENT AND TWO PER CENT RESPECTIVELY. RETAIL SALES OF CONSUMER DURABLES REMAINED UNCHANGED IN VALUE TERMS, BUT DECLINED BY SIX PER CENT IN VOLUME TERMS. THE VALUE AND VOLUME OF RETAIL SALES OF FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO DECREASED BY SEVEN PER CENT AND 10 PËR CENT RESPECTIVELY.

COMPARED WITH OCTOBER 1982, RETAIL SALES OF FUELS ROSE BY 23 PER CENT IN VALUE TERMS, THOSE OF CONSUMER DURABLES BY 19 PER CENT, OTHER CONSUMER GOODS BY 16 PER CENT, FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO BY 13 PER CENT, AND CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS BY FIVE PER CENT. IN VOLUME TERMS, FUELS AND CONSUMER DURABLES EACH INCREASED BY FOUR PER CENT AND OTHER CONSUMER GOODS BY THREE PER CENT. THE VOLUME OF RETAIL SALES OF FOODSTUFFS, ALCOHOLIC DRINKS AND TOBACCO, AND CLOTHING, FOOTWEAR AND ALLIED PRODUCTS EACH WENT DOWN BY TWO PER CENT.
