+AT THE SAME TIME, GOVERNMENT ARCHITECTS HAVE ALSO BEEN WORKING ON THE DETAILED DESIGN OF WHAT WOULD BE A FULLY EQUIPPED GENERAL HOSPITAL TO MEET THE NEEDS OF THE GROWING POPULATION IN THE DISTRICT.+

THE SPOKESMAN SAID THAT THE VARIOUS GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT WOULD KEEP THE EASTERN DISTRICT BOARD FULLY BRIEFED ON DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESS.

THE EASTERN DISTRICT HOSPITAL IS PLANNED ON THE BASIS OF AN ACUTE HOSPITAL PROVIDING A COMPREHENSIVE RANGE OF SPECIALISTS' TREATMENT FACILITIES, INCLUDING PSYCHIATRY, A 24-HOUR ACCIDENT AND EMERGENCY SERVICE, A NURSES TRAINING SCHOOL AND A SPECIALISTS' OUTPATIENT CLINIC.

THE HOSPITAL COMPLEX IS SCHEDULED FOR COMPLETION TOWARDS THE END OF THE DECADE. THE SPOKESMAN SAID THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS FULLY AWARE OF THE NEED FOR STRENGTHENING MEDICAL FACILITIES IN THE EASTERN DISTRICT AND FULLY APPRECIATES THE CONCERN EXPRESSED BY VARIOUS GROUPS AND INDIVIDUALS ON THE SUBJECT.

HE EMPHASISED THAT THE GOVERNMENT WILL TAKE ALL POSSIBLE MEASURES TO ENSURE THAT THE PROJECT IS COMPLETED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

EMPLOYERS REMINDED ABOUT REQUIRED INSURANCE

LEGISLATION ON COMPULSORY INSURANCE FOR EMPLOYEES INJURED OR KILLED AT WORK WILL COME INTO OPERATION ON JANUARY 1, NEXT YEAR.

ANNOUNCING THIS TODAY (FRIDAY), A SPOKESMAN FOR THE LABOUR DEPARTMENT SAID THAT A NOTICE TO THIS EFFECT WAS PUBLISHED IN TODAY'S GOVERNMENT GAZETTE.

HE REMINDED EMPLOYERS THAT THE EMPLOYEES' COMPENSATION ORDINANCE REQUIRES AN EMPLOYER TO BE INSURED IN RESPECT OF ALL HIS EMPLOYEES FOR THE FULL AMOUNT OF HIS LIABILITIES FOR BOTH COMPENSATION UNDER THE ORDINANCE AND COMMON LAW DAMAGES FOR INJURIES AND DEATH AS A RESULT OF AN ACCIDENT AT WORK.

EMPLOYERS MUST BEAR THE FULL COST OF THEIR INSURANCE POLICIES AND ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DEDUCT THE COST FROM THE EARNINGS OF THEIR EMPLOYEES.

*THE PURPOSE OF REQUIRING AN EMPLOYER TO TAKE OUT AN INSURANCE POLICY IS TO ENSURE THAT AN EMPLOYEE WHO IS INJURED OR KILLED AT WORK WOULD OBTAIN COMPENSATION TO WHICH HE IS ENTITLED UNDER THE ORDINANCE.

+AN EMPLOYER WHO EMPLOYS ANYONE WITHOUT AN INSURANCE POLICY COMMITS AN OFFENCE AND IS LIABLE ON CONVICTION TO A MAXIMUM PENALTY OF $50 000 AND IMPRISONMENT FOR TWO YEARS, THE SPOKESMAN STRESSED.
