IN ADDITION TO THE LANDSIDE IMPROVEMENTS AND TERMINAL BUILDING EXPANSION, OTHER AIRPORT FACILITIES WILL NEED TO BE EXPANDED TO COPE WITH INCREASED TRAFFIC.

CARGO, LONG-TERM AND MAINTENANCE AIRCRAFT PARKING EXPANSION IS PROVIDED BY THE AVAILABILITY OF THE FORMER RAF LAND AT KAI TAK, AND INCREMENTAL APRON EXPANSION INTO THIS AREA CAN BE UNDERTAKEN WHEN NECESSARY.

FURTHER PASSENGER AIRCRAFT PARKING APRON SPACE CAN BE PROVIDED TO THE SOUTH OF THE EXISTING APRON. IT IS ENVISAGED THAT THREE NEW PARKING POSITIONS WILL BE CONSTRUCTED THERE BY 1987.

ADDITIONALLY, MAJOR CIVIL ENGINEERING WORKS TO REJUVENATE TAXIWAY AND APRON PAVEMENTS WILL BE REQUIRED OVER THE NEXT DECADE ALTHOUGH PROGRAMMES FOR THESE WORKS HAVE NOT YET BEEN ESTABLISHED, THE SPOKESMAN SAID.

THE HONG KONG AIR CARGO TERMINAL BUILDING IS CURRENTLY BEING SUBSTANTIALLY EXPANDED, AND ASSOCIATED CARGO AIRCRAFT PARKING APRON EXTENSIONS WILL START LATER THIS YEAR. THE EXTENDED CARGO APRON WILL BE ABLE TO ACCOMMODATE FIVE BOEING 747 CARGO AIRCRAFT SIMULTANEOUSLY.

THE APPROXIMATE COST OF THE STAGE V PACKAGE IS EXPECTED TO BE $400 MILLION, A SUM WHICH WILL BE SPENT FROM 1984 TO 1987.

THE COST OF FURTHER WORK ON THE AIRPORT RUNWAY, TAXIWAY AND APRON PAVEMENTS WILL BE AROUND $200 MILLION, BUT THIS EXPENDITURE WILL BE SPREAD OVER A LONGER PERIOD, THE SPOKESMAN SAID.

PROGRESSIVE REPLACEMENT OF AEROBRIDGES AND OTHER FEATURES, THE UPGRADING AND COMPUTER ISATION OF AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL EQUIPMENT, AND THE PROVISION OF NEW VISUAL AND ELECTRONIC LANDING AIDS AND RADARS ARE EXPECTED TO COST A FURTHER $150 MILLION.

IN ACCORDANCE WITH ESTABLISHED GOVERNMENT PRACTICE, ALL PROPOSALS FOR THE KAI TAK DEVELOPMENT WILL BE PROCESSED ACCORDING TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMME, HE SAID.

IT IS HOPED THAT FURTHER DETAILED DESIGN WORK ON STAGE V CAN PROCEED AT THE END OF THIS MONTH WHEN THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO BE UPGRADED IN STATUS IN THE PUBLIC WORKS PROGRAMME.
