TEN +METRIC+ DAYS FOR HONG KONG

THE METRICATION COMMITTEE TODAY (TUESDAY) DISCLOSED PLANS TO LAUNCH ITS BIGGEST EVER PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN ENTITLED +METRIC 10 DAYS+ NEXT MONTH (JANUARY, 1983).

THE CAMPAIGN'S ORGANISING CHAIRMAN, MISS OPHELIA CHEUNG, TOLD A ROTARY CLUB LUNCHEON MEETING THAT THE CAMPAIGN, SCHEDULED TO RUN FROM JANUARY 14 TO 23, HAD BEEN NINE MONTHS IN PREPARATION.

+ IT IS A MAJOR EFFORT IN AN EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME DESIGNED TO HELP THE PUBLIC OVERCOME THEIR FEAR OF CONVERSION TO, AND ACCEPTANCE OF, THE METRIC SYSTEM IN THEIR DAILY LIVES,+ SHE SAID.

MISS CHEUNG POINTED OUT THAT A PERSON'S ACCEPTANCE OF THE METRIC SYSTEM VARIED IN DIRECT RELATION TO HOW MUCH HE KNEW ABOUT THIS SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENT.

MISS CHEUNG SAID: +DURING THE 10-DAY PERIOD, AN EXCITING SERIES OF EVENTS WITH MASSIVE PUBLICITY SUPPORT WILL BE HELD TO FAMILIARISE THE GENERAL PUBLIC WITH THE COMMON METRIC TERMS+.

THE SUPPORT OF THE MASS MEDIA WILL ALSO BE ENLISTED AT EVERY STAGE OF THE CAMPAIGN TO ENSURE THE METRICATION MESSAGE WILL REACH THE WIDEST POSSIBLE AUDIENCE.

THE EVENTS WILL INCLUDE STREET THEATRE SHOWS, A GAMES DAY, POSTER DESIGN AND LYRIC WRITING COMPETITIONS, NEWSPAPER AND RADIO QUIZZES, A SEMINAR, A 10-KILOMETRE RACE AND A SPECIAL TELEVISION VAR IETY SHOW.

MISS CHEUNG SAID THAT MANY ORGANISATIONS, PRIVATE AND GOVERNMENT ALIKE, WERE GIVING THEIR VALUABLE SUPPORT TO THE CAMPAIGN.

IN ADDITION, MANY SUPERMARKETS AND DEPARTMENT STORES WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE CAMPAIGN BY SELLING GOODS IN METRIC UNITS.

IN CONCLUDING, MISS CHEUNG SAID THAT THE CAMPAIGN WILL HOPEFULLY BEGIN A NEW ERA OF CONSUMER AWARENESS TO METRICATION AND SHE CALLED ON MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC TO SUPPORT AND TAKE PART IN THE CAMPAIGN'S ACTIVITIES.
