HE NOTED THAT THE HONG KONG INSTITUTE PLAYS A LEADING ROLE IN THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ASIAN-PACIFIC FEDERATION FOR PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT, AND SAID IT WAS FITTING THAT HONG KONG'S
PROFESSIONAL MANAGERS SHOULD PARTICIPATE IN AND INFLUENCE MATTERS WHICH IMPINGE ON ITS REGIONAL RELATIONSHIPS.
HE WAS A FIRM SUPPORTER OF THE IDEALS OF THE INSTITUTE BECAUSE THEY ARE ACCORD WITH HONG KONG'S OWN ASPIRATIONS, HE SAID.
+WE HAVE NO RESOURCES EXCEPT OUR PEOPLE,+ MR BREMRIDGE CONCLUDED, IN DECLARING OPEN THE CONVENTION.
ROLE FOR BAPTIST COLLEGE IN SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION

THE UNIVERSITY AND POLYTECHNIC GRANTS COMMITTEE HAS MADE A NUMBER OF POSITIVE SUGGESTIONS TO THE BAPTIST COLLEGE ABOUT COURSES TO BE INCLUDED IN ITS FUTURE DEVELOPMENT PLANS, AND HAS DELINEATED A ROLE FOR THE COLLEGE IN THE SYSTEM OF HIGHER EDUCATION.
THE COLLEGE IS SEEN AS A COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES, IN WHICH PROVISION IS MADE FOR LIBERAL EDUCATION, BUT WITH AN ORIENTATION MORE TOWARDS PREPARATION FOR LOCAL EMPLOYMENT THAN POST-GRADUATE EDUCATION.
+THIS IS A ROLE WHICH IS NOT, ACCORDING TO THE UPGC, BEING PERFORMED BY OTHER INSTITUTIONS AND IN WHICH THE BAPTIST COLLEGE CAN BE SEEN TO BE PRE-EMINENT, SAID A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN TODAY.
THE UPGC HAS ASKED THE COLLEGE TO CONSIDER AN INCREASED DEGREE OF COMPUTER LITERACY FOR ALL STUDENTS AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF COURSES WHICH EMPHASIZE COMPUTER APPLICATIONS WITHIN PARTICULAR ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES. THE COLLEGE MIGHT ALSO CONSIDER DEVELOPMENTS IN GEOTECHNICAL SCIENCES AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL STUDIES. THESE PROPOSALS ARE ALL INTENDED TO INTRODUCE FRESH AND PRACTICAL ELEMENTS INTO ACADEMIC COURSES.
THE UPGC HAS SAID THAT THE COLLEGE SHOULD MAKE PROPOSALS COMPATIBLE WITH A RECURRENT EXPENDITURE CEILING OF $40 M FOR 1983-84 FOR POST-ADVANCED LEVEL STUDIES. +THE FIGURE OF $40 M SHOULD GIVE SCOPE FOR POSITIVE DEVELOPMENTS+, THE SPOKESMAN SAID.
THE COMMITTEE WILL MAKE SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE GOVERNMENT AFTER IT HAS RECEIVED AND CONSIDERED DEVELOPMENT PROPOSALS NOW BEING INVITED FROM THE COLLEGE.
