which gives emphasis to practical and technical subjects such as Design

and Technology, Art and Design, Home Economics and Commerce, but at the same

time does not forget the more academic subjects, such as Chemistry, Physics

Hong Kong's economy is primarily dependent upon export-

oriented manufacturing industries and the support of a wide range of

service industries operating within a free port, free enterprise environment.

These industries require technologists, technicians, craftsmen and skilled

workers at all levels. It is therefore imperative for us to produce the

skilled manpower we require in sufficient numbers to meet the needs of

our industry which is becoming ever more sophisticated.

Whilst the onus rests on the universities, the Polytechnic

and the technical institutes for the training of technologists, technicians

and craftsmen, our secondary technical schools play a vital role in helping

students to acquire the basic technical skills thus opening up for them the

vista of a multitude of different careers in industry,

The completion of the Tang Shiu Kin Victoria Technical School

has made it possible not only to provide better facilities for the existing

technical school, but has also made the premises of the old Victoria Technical

School available for use by the Technical Teachers' College and the

Morrison Hill Technical Institute, thereby providing both these institutions

with much-improved accommodation.
