ADDRESS BY THE HONOURABLE CHIEF SECHETARY, SIR JACK CATER,

KBE JP AT THE OFFNING CEREMONY OF THE TANG SHIU KIN VICTORIA

TECHNICAL SCHOOL ON THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 1980

It is my very great pleasure to officiate at the opening

ceremony of a school building which has come into existence through the

generous donation of four million dollars from Sir Shiu-kin Tang, the

well-known Hong Kong philanthropist whose name is associated with so

many institutions which provide educational, medical and social services.

for the people of Hong Kong.

The Tang Shiu Kin' Victoria Technical School is one of the

oldest government schools to offer a technically-oriented education, and was established in 1932. At that time, it operated as a school of

four classes. and was known as the "Junior Technical College": it shared

·

the same building with what was then called "The Technical College".

In 1957, the school was renamed Victoria Technical School

when it moved into its premises at Wood Road. Gradually the school

expanded and took over the building formerly occupied by the Jockey Club Government Primary School.. In order to cope with further expansion,

there was a need for it to find yet another new home in a building which

could offer the full range of facilities required. Thanks to the

:

generosity of Sir Shiu-kin, the school has now been provided with a

modern building of 24 classrooms, 16 special rooms and a school hall which

can accommodate 1 200 students.
