TSING YI ISLAND TO GET NEW PUMPING STATION

THE WATER SUPPLIES DEPARTMENT IS INVITING TENDERS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF A SALT WATER PUMPING STATION AND STAFF QUARTERS ON THE RECLAMATION AT THE EASTERN PART OF TSING YI ISLAND NEAR THE TSING YI BRIDGE.

THE PUMPING STATION WILL HAVE A CAPACITY OF SUPPLYING 24 000 CUBIC METRES OF SALT WATER A DAY.

ON COMPLETION, IT WILL NOT ONLY IMPROVE THE SUPPLY OF SEA-WATER FOR FLUSHING TO THE ISLANDERS BUT WILL ALSO IMPROVE FIRE FIGHTING FACILITIES ON THE ISLAND.

WORK ON THE PROJECT WILL BEGIN IN NOVEMBER AND TAKE 13 MONTHS TO COMPLETE.

THRILLS AND SPILLS AT ABERDEEN SWIMMING POOL TODAY (SUNDAY) WHEN THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT HELD ITS 1980 SWIMMING GALA.

THE COLOUR WAS PROVIDED BY THE FIRST AND SECOND RUNNERS UP OF THE MISS HONG KONG CONTEST, MISS JULIA CHAN AND MISS JANET WONG WHEN THEY ASSISTED MRS MCDONALD, WIFE OF THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS, IN CUTTING THE OPENING CEREMONY RIBBON.

AND THEN IT WAS A BIG SPLASH DURING THE REST OF THE AFTERNOON AS 25 EVENTS WERE BATTLED OUT WITH 516 ENTRIES FROM PWD STAFF WHEN THEY COMPETED IN FREESTYLE, BACKSTROKE, BREASTSTROKE AND BUTTERFLY STYLES, RELAYS AND MEDLEYS.

THERE WAS VARIETY FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN AND DISTANCE

OF SWIM RANGED FROM 25 METRES TO 400 METRES.

TWELVE OFFICES WITHIN THE DEPARTMENT SUBMITTED ENTRIES THE HIGHEST NUMBER FROM THE ELECTRICAL AND MECHANICAL OFFICE WITH 149 ENTRIES AND 58 COMPETITORS.

AT THE END OF THE DAY, AS JUDGES AND OFFICIALS TOTTED UP FINAL SCORES, THE SWIMMERS AND SPECTATORS WERE TREATED TO A DISPLAY OF SYNCHRONISED SWIMMING BY MEMBERS OF THE HONG KONG LIFE GUARD CLUB.

DURING HIS OPENING ADDRESS, THE DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS, "R DAVID MCDONALD, PRAISED THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE.

THE OBJECTS OF THE COMMITTEE, HE SAID, WERE TO PROMOTE RELATIONSHIP, MUTUAL HELP AND UNDERSTANDING AMONG FELLOW COLLEAGUES IN THE DEPARTMENT AND TO PROMOTE AND ORGANISE SPORTS ACTIVITIES IN THE GENERAL INTEREST OF PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT STAFF.
