ADDRESS BY THE ACTING GOVERNOR, SIR JACK CATER

AT THE OPENING OF THE 1979 TOY AND GIFT FATA, MIRAMAR HOTEL, ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1979

I am sure that it would be quite sufficient on an occasion like this to congratulate the toy industry on their sustained energy and initiative and to express the confident hope that they will continue to be

one of Hong Kong's success stories. Congratulations are certainly in order

for an industry which has developed spectacularly in two decades and which,

this year, has outperformed industry as a whole by a subatantial margin.

The overall growth rate for our domestic exports for the first

half of the year was 34 per cent. Shipments of toys for the same period

advanced over 51 per cent to a value of more than 2 000 million,

in terms of exports the third largest sector of our manufacturing .

industry, is of real significance for our economy and deserves examination. It certainly did not happen by accident, and this occasion provides evidence of the effort which has gone into the development of the toy industry.
