SUPPLEMENT

SPEECH BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE ACTING GOVERNOR,

SIR JACK CATER, K.B.3., J.P., ON THE OCCASION

OF THE MARYKNOLL CONVENT SCHOOL SPEECH DAY ON JUNE 14, 1979

My wife and I are honoured to be with you today on the occasion

of your annual speech day. Your school has certainly come a long way

since it was founded in 1925 as a small kindergarten with an enrolment of

12, to the present school complex with an enrolment of 2,510!

The contribution which the Laryknoll Sisters have made to

education in Hong Kong is significant, and you are all indeed fortunate

to be educated here where not only is academic achievement prized but

where the development of a well-balanced, wholesome personality is the school's objective.

I quote from your magazine which summarises Maryknoll's view of

the philosophy of education: "to provide experiences which will enable

students to grow as individuals, spiritually, physically, intellectually

and to become informed, sensitive, responsible members of society."

I know that you have a full range of activities within the

school including sports days, games competitions, swiming galas, as well

as mumerous clubs and societies. And in taking full advantage of the

facilities offered to students, I can see that you must be very busy as

well as talented young people.
