MOTORCYCLISTS WILL BE BANNED FROM WEARING PUDDING BASIN TYPE CRASH HELMETS FROM JUNE 1, A SPOKESMAN FOR THE TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT SAID TODAY (FRIDAY).
+THEY WILL BE REQUIRED TO WEAR JET TYPE HEADGEAR WHICH PROTECTS THE TEMPLES, EARS AND LOWER BACK PART OF THE HEAD, THE SPOKESMAN SAID, ADDING THAT PILLION PASSENGERS WILL ALSO HAVE TO WEAR THIS TYPE OF HELMET.
HE SAID THE ROAD TRAFFIC (PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT) (AMENDMENT OF SCHEDULE) ORDER 1979 GAZETTED TODAY DELETED THE PUDDING BASIN TYPE HELMETS - BRITISH STANDARDS 2001 AND 1869 - FROM THE REGULATIONS AND SUBSTITUTED WITH THE JET TYPE IN COMPLIANCE WITH BRITISH STANDARD 5361.
+THE JET TYPE MODEL REPRESENTS A SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED SAFETY HELMET STANDARD, THE SPOKESMAN EXPLAINED.
ON SAFETY MEASURES, THE SPOKESMAN ADVISED MOTORCYCLISTS TO FASTEN THEIR HELMETS SECURELY.
+USING THE CHIN CUP ALONE IS NOT ADVISABLE BECAUSE IT COULD SLIP OFF EASILY IN AN ACCIDENT WHEREAS IF THE STRAP IS SECURED BENEATH THE JAW THERE IS LESS CHANCE OF LOSING THE HELMET, HE SAID.
+CRASH HELMETS MAY NOT ALWAYS PREVENT DEATH OR LONG-TERM DISABILITY BUT A PROPORTION OF THE FORCE OF IMPACT IN ANY ACCIDENT IS ABSORBED AND THUS REDUCE THE IMPACT TO THE HEAD, HE SAID.
THE SPOKESMAN SAID MOTORCYCLISTS SHOULD BUY THE BEST HELMET THEY CAN AFFORD BUT IN BUYING, THEY SHOULD MAKE SURE IT BORE A LABEL INDICATING COMPLIANCE WITH THE SPECIFICATIONS IN THE STANDARDS SET OUT BELOW 1
