SPEECH BY THE GOVERNOR, SIR MURRAY MACLEHOSE, G.B.E., K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., TO THE GENERAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE : JANUARY 19, 1979
Since I last spoke to you Hong Kong has proceeded on what has
been a fairly prosperous course. In 1978 our domestic exports up to
November grew in money terms by 16 per cent, our overall exports by
20 per cent, revenue is buoyant, the GDP for 1978 looks as if it will be
comfortably over the 9 per cent increase forecast.
Though an undesirably large proportion of this is due to
domestic consumption rather than exports, and the imbalance in the
economy to which I referred last year has increased.
