PRIVATE DEVELOPERS TO BUILD 1,500 HOME OWNERSHIP SCHEME FLATS *****

ARRANGEMENTS BETWEEN THE GOVERNMENT AND TWO PRIVATE COMPANIES TO BUILD 1,500 HOME OWNERSHIP SCHEME FLATS WERE ANNOUNCED TODAY (MONDAY).

UNDER THE ARRANGEMENTS 1,000 FLATS AT TUEN MUN WILL BE DEVELOPED BY THE HONGKONG LAND COMPANY LIMITED WHILE BREWOOD ENTERPRISES LIMITED, A SUBSIDIARY OF THE GREAT EAGLE GROUP, WILL BUILD 506 FLATS AT YAU TONG.

THESE ARE THE FIRST PROJECTS UNDER WHICH PRIVATE DEVELOPERS ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE HOME OWNERSHIP SCHEME ANNOUNCED BY THE GOVERNMENT LAST APRIL.

A TOTAL OF 11 TENDERS WERE RECEIVED FOR THE TWO PROJECTS, WHICH SECRETARY FOR HOUSING, MR. ALAN SCOTT, DESCRIBED AS +VERY ENCOURAGING+. THE TWO SUCCESSFUL COMPANIES WERE OFFICIALLY NOTIFIED TODAY BY MR. SCOTT.

THE TUEN MUN PROJECT WILL CONSIST OF EIGHT BLOCKS EACH OF 16 STOREYS BUILT ON A SITE ON CASTLE PEAK ROAD TO THE NORTH OF SAM SHING HUT.

THERE WILL BE THREE TYPES OF FLATS OF 430 SQUARE FEET (4) SQUARE METRES) 509 SQUARE FEET (47.3 SQUARE METRES) AND 579 SQUARE FEET (53.8 SQUARE METRES) IN SIZE, MORE THAN HALF THE NUMBER OF FLATS WILL BE OF MEDIUM SIZE (1.E. 509 SQUARE FEET), WHILE 250 WILL HAVE TWO BEDROOMS AND THE REMAINING 750 WILL HAVE THREE BEDROOMS.

THERE WILL BE PARKING SPACES FOR 216 CARS, AND OPEN SPACE WILL TOTAL NEARLY 33,000 SQUARE FEET (3,050 SQUARE METRES).

A COMMERCIAL AREA ON THE GROUND FLOOR AND FIRST FLOOR PODIUM WILL INCLUDE BANKS, RESTAURANTS, A SUPERMARKET, SHOPS AND A DEPARTMENT STORE.

THE PROJECT, CONSTRUCTION OF WHICH IS EXPECTED TO START IN EARLY 1979, WILL TAKE 27 MONTHS TO COMPLETE.
