EXPANSION OF SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK

SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK SERVICE WILL BE EXTENDED TO COVER 85 SCHOOLS IN THE 1977/78 SCHOOL YEAR AN INCREASE OF MORE THAN FOUR TIMES COMPARED WITH THE NUMBER OF SCHOOLS PRESENTLY SERVED.
THIS WAS STATED BY THE DIRECTOR OF SOCIAL WELFARE, MR. THOMAS LEE, AT THE GRADUATION CEREMONY OF THE HIOE TJO YOENG PRIMARY AND EVENING SCHOOL THIS (THURSDAY) AFTERNOON.
MR. LEE SAID THAT SINCE ITS INCEPTION IN NOVEMBER 1974, THE SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK SERVICE HAD BEEN MAKING STEADY PROGRESS.
+ IN THE PAST SCHOOL YEAR, ITS NUMBER OF PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS HAD INCREASED FROM FIVE TO TEN WITH A TOTAL ENROLMENT OF 12,000 PUPILS. IN THE 1976/77 SCHOOL YEAR, 17 SCHOOLS WITH A TOTAL OF 19,000 HAVE BEEN ELECTED TO JOIN THE SERVICE.+
THE DIRECTOR NOTED THAT EXPERIENCE GAINED IN THE SCHEME HAD CONFIRMED THE USEFULNESS OF SUCH A SERVICE WHICH HAD ALSO BEEN PROVED TO BE THE MOST PRACTICAL AND EFFECTIVE FORM OF FAMILY AND YOUTH SERVICE.
+FOR THE 1977/78 SCHOOL YEAR, PLANS HAVE BEEN MADE TO STRENGTHEN THE SERVICE FROM 17 TO 85 SCHOOLS. IN THE VOLUNTARY SECTOR, EIGHT AGENCIES ARE ALREADY PROVIDING SIMILAR SERVICE TO 99 SCHOOLS WITH A TOTAL OF 80,000 PUPILS.
+THE SOCIAL WELFARE DEPARTMENT WILL CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE AGENCIES TO EXPAND THEIR SERVICES TO COVER MORE SCHOOLS.+
MR. LEE POINTED CUT THAT THE AIM OF THE SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK SCHEME WAS BOTH PREVENTIVE AND REMEDIAL’.
+WITH THE CONCERTED EFFORTS OF TEACHERS AND SOCIAL WORKERS, STUDENTS ARE BEING HELPED TO SOLVE THE IR MANY PERSONAL AND FAMILY PROBLEMS. TO IMPROVE THE IR BEHAVIOUR BOTH IN AND OUT OF SCHOOL AND TO PREVENT THEM FROM BEING INFLUENCED BY OR JOINING CRIMINAL ELEMENTS.+
THE DIRECTOR SAID THAT SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK ALSO SERVED AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE SCHOOL AND THE FAMILY.
+ IF THE CHILD HAS PROBLEMS AT HOME, THE SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER WILL GIVE ADVICE TO HIS PARENTS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE IR RELATIONSHIP.
+ IF THE CHILD HAS EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS, THE SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER WILL, THROUGH COUNSELLING WITH THE CHILD AND HIS FAMILY, FIND OUT WHAT HAS GONE WRONG AND THEN HELP SOLVE THEM.
+ IF THE CHILD'S ACADEMIC RESULTS ARE POOR, THE SOCIAL WORKER WILL ADVISE THE PARENTS TO PAY MORE ATTENTION TO HIM AND MAKE ARRANGEMENTS FOR HIM TO ATTEND THE FREE TUTORIAL CLASSES ORGANISED BY WELFARE ORGANISATIONS.+
