Tuen hun will live in public housing. The first estate, San Fat,

is occupied and there are nine others to come, eight to be built

by the Housing Authority and one by the Housing Society.

"The first phase of Tai Hing will provide accommodation

for 24,000 more people this summer and a further 22,000 by 1979.

"On the land now being formed by reclamation of Castle

Peak Bay, Tau Oi and On Ting estates will accommodate some 93,000

more people. Work on the first phase will start in October and

should house 30,000 people by February 1980.

"And so the steady flow of new housing will continue until

the town is completed in the mid-80s.

"But those who live in Tuen Mun must have work. So

provision of industrial land and the attraction of industry is as

important as the provision of housing.

built and will be working later this year or early next.

land will be produced steadily so as to keep step with the growing

population's need for employment.

"In all a total of 93 hectares has already been formed and

is being developed. A further 72 hectares are being reclaimed and

will become available over the next 18 months. The reclamation of

some 70 hectares of land on the Western side of Castle Peak Bay will

start in June.

"It will be vital to the prosperity of the New Town to have

good communications with the old urban area and the harbour. The

first three lanes of the Tuen Mun motorway will open early next

year and should provide a 15 minute link to Tsuen Wan where a clear-

way is being constructed to provide rapid passage to Kowloon.
