The first phase of Cheung Ching Estate will be ready for

occupation next year; it is due to be fully completed by 1981 when

65,000 people will be living in 12,000 fully self-contained flats at

an average density of 1,260 people to the acre.

In this first phase, five blocks

four of them twin tower

design

will be constructed; an extension to the first phase, for which

a $32 million contract was signed in October, will consist of two twin

tower blocks.

Site formation for Phase II, which comprises nine blocks, has

already begun.

The Estate will have its own markets, shops and schools, as

well as 15 acres of open spaces.

From Tsing Yi, the Acting Governor travelled to Tsuen Wan where

he toured the almost completed Lai Yiu Estate which is due shortly to

receive its first tenants. Sir Denys was accompanied by Chief Architect

Mr Ng Yee-fook.

Lai Yiu Estate consists of four blocks, three of twin tower

design, ranging in height from 24 storeys. Ultimately, 16,200 people

will live there at a density of only 736 people to the acre. The Estate

will have schools, kindergartens and bus termini; commercial facilities,

including shops and market stalls, will be centralized on a traffic-free

podium.

The Estate is expected to be fully completed by July next year.

The group then moved to Sha Tin where Sir Denys was shown

round Wo Che Estate, now being constructed adjacent to Lek Yuen Estate.
