A CHANGE OF HOME IS AS GOOD AS A REST
For the past six months Mr. Lai Ming-chan has been rising
early to travel from his home at Chai Wan to his place at work at
Tsuen Wan - more than 13 miles, and a total daily travelling time of
over three hours.
At the same time Mr. Cheung Ping-wah would make the same
daily journey, changing buses three times, but in the opposite direction,
Mr. Cheung lived at Lei Muk Shue Estate, Tsuen Wan and travelled to work
at Chai Wan.
Now, after a little help from the Housing Department's
recently formed Tenants Mutual Exchange Bureau, Mr. Lai and Mr. Cheung
live on the doorstep of their respective employments.
The Bureau, set up in August, is designed to aid people like
Mr. Lai and Mr. Cheung, who occupy public housing but for some reason
or another would prefer to live in another district.
All applications to the Mutual Exchange Bureau are sorted
and classified, and where possible suitable exchanges are arranged.
The usual reason for tenants wishing to move is a need to
be nearer to work. However, the Bureau has experienced many other
situations in which tenants request a change of neighbourhood. These
range from quarrels with the neighbours, to seeking a lower rental
unit, the desirability for children to be closer to school and many
other personal reasons.
