At present, there are about 150 back-to-back-type flats in
the block, but this number will be reduced by approximately half as a
result of knocking out centre walls. When the work has been completed,
flat sizes will range from 160 square feet for three persons to 440
square feet for 10 persons, and rents from $75 $190 per month.
Each converted flat will be provided with a private balcony,
tap, sink and detached toilet.
The spokesman said that, with work going on around them,
tenants were bound to experience some inconvenience, but it would be
kept to a minimum and he felt they would be willing to accept this
in order to get improved accommodation.
"If the scheme is a success, it could be applied to other
blocks in our Mark I and Mark II estates and make a significant
contribution to our efforts to provide better living conditions in
older estates," he said,
