$500,000 ALLOCATED FROM LI PO CHUN FUND

Half a million dollars from the Li Po Chun Charitable Trust

Fund were made available to worthy students and people in distress

during the year ended last August.

Of the total sum, $250,000 was awarded as scholarships

to students to undertake studies locally and abroad.

Another $249,800 was allocated to the Social Welfare Department

for providing temporary relief to people in distress who had no

adequate assistance from other sources.

The Li Po Chun Charitable Trust Fund was established in

1963 and is administered by a Committee chaired by the Secretary for

Home Affairs. The fund consists of a number of shares in local

companies, donated by the late Mr. Li Po-chun, together with dividends

derived from the shares.

Scholarships are available for students at the universitics,

the Polytechnic, technical institutes, pre-vocational schools and

English secondary and Chinese middle schools.

Last year, a post-graduate scholarship was awarded to a student

to take up a course of study at the University of Leeds.

Of the sums allocated to help the neody, the largest amount. •

over $92,000, wis distributed as grants to those whose circumstances

were not covered by the provisions of the public assistance scheme.

The second largest sum, amounting to over $84,710, was disbursed

as temporary grants for rent and other essential payments.

Grants for removal and re-accommodation, resite-hut con-

struction and school fees together amounted to over $69,000,
