SECRETARY FOR HOUSING INSPECTS NEW ESTATE SITES
The Secretary for Housing, Mr. Ian Lightbody, spent this
(Londay) morning visiting a number of new Housing Authority estate sites
in the New Territories where construction work is proceeding.
Mr. Lightbody called first at Kwai Shing and then Lei luk Shue
and ended his morning tour at Tuen Mun. All these estates are designed
and built by the Architectural Office of the Public Works Department.
Accompanying Mr. Lightbody on his visit was lir. Thomas Ku
of the Architectural Office, PWD.
at Lei luk Shue, Mr. Lightbody inspected one of the six
recently completed blocks where tenants have already begun moving in,
The estate is designed for up to 38,000 people.
Work on two sites at Kwai Shing is being pushed ahead and the
estate will be completed between harch and August next year. The
estate occupies a most attractive hill site overlooking Tsuen Wan and
Tsing Yi. The scheme includes three primary schools.
Finally ir. Lightbody visited the site of the new Tai Hing
housing
estate at Tuen Mun where 30-storey cruciform blocks, each
about 8,000 people, are building modern mechanical methods, using towering
cranes to lift prefabricated wall and floor couponments into place.
The contractors have built an elaborated precasting yard on site
where these components are poured in moulds and dried, These cruciform
blocks will be wide at the ground level and narrow at the upper floors 60
producing a variety of flat sizes. Each flat will have its own toilet
and kitchen.
