URBAN IMPROVEMENT SCHEME IN WESTERN

THE GOVERNMENT INTENDS TO RESUME ABOUT 3,500 SQUARE FEET OF LAND AT THE WESTERN END OF QUEEN'S ROAD WEST IN ORDER TO ENADLE THE HONG KONG HOUSING SOCIETY TO UNDERTAKE AN URBAN IMPROVEMENT SCHEME IN THE AREA.

THIS WAS ANNOUNCED IN A GAZETTE NOTIFICATION TODAY.

AFFECTED WILL BE A FOUR-STOREY BUILDING WITH SHOPS ON THE GROUND FLOOR AND DOMESTIC FLATS ON THE UPPER FLOORS. THE BUILDING, WHICH WAS CONSTRUCTED IN THE EARLY POST-WAR YEARS, IS IN POOR CONDITION AND CROUDED. IT OCCUPIES 409-499, QUEEN'S ROAD WEST.

FOLLOWING THE POSTING OF RÉSUMPTION NOTICES TODAY, THE HOUSING SOCIETY IS CONTACTING ALL RESIDENTS AND COMMERCIAL OCCUPANTS IN THE BUILDING TO EXPLAIN THE POSITION AND WILL DE MAKING FUL INVESTIGATIONS OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS WITH REGARD TO POSSIBLE RELOUSING IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD. THIS WILL INVOLVE AN OFFER OF A FLAT WHICH RESIDENTS CAN BUY ON ATTRACTIVE TERMS IN AN ADJOINING NEW BUILDING, MEI SUN LAU, WHICH IS DUE TO BE COMPLETED ADOUT AP..IL 1976.

THE MEI SUN LAU BUILDING WILL CONTAIN 193 SMALL SELF-CONTAINED FLATS AND A SHOPPING ARCADE ON THE GROUND FLOOR, WITH A CHILDREN'S PLAYGROUND AND SOME COMMUNITY FACILITIES AT THE FIRST-FLOOR LEVEL. ABOUT HALF THE FLATS WILL HAVE A SEA VIEW.

THE PROPERTY NOW GAZETTED FOR RESUMPTION WILL LATER DE DEMOLISHED AND A NEW COMMERCIAL/RESIDENTIAL BLOCK ERECTED ON THE SITE TO HOUSE FAMILIES FROM OTHER URBAN IMPROVEMENT SCHEME PROJECTS IN THE SAME AREA.

A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID: THE URBAN IMPROVEMENT SCHEME IS NOT MERELY CONCERNED WITH THE RE-DEVELOPMENT OF PROPERTY ITS MAIN AIM IS TO OFFER IMPROVED HOUSING FOR THOSE INVOLVED WITHOUT MAKING IT NECESSARY FOR THEM TO MOVE OUT OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD IN WHICH THEY NOW LIVE.+
