THE DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION, HR. KENNETH TOPLEY SPOKE ADOUT TIE BROAD AHMS OF EDUCATION AND THE FUNCTIONS OF THE SCHOOL WHEN NE ADDRESSED THE LUNCHEON MEETING OF THE LIONS CLUB OF TAI PING SHAN THIS AFTERNOON,
HE CONSIDERED THIS TOPIC TO DE FUNDAMENTAL TO THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION.
MR. TOPLEY SAID: ÷SCHOOLS MUST OFFEN EVERY POSSIBLE OPPORTUNITY FOR SERVICGABLE TALENT TO HANIFEST ITSELF, WHATEVER DIRECTION IT MAY TAKE AND HOWEVER LIMITED IN RANGE IT MAY DE.
+IT FOLLOYS, THEN, THAT THE AIM OF EDUCATION SHOULD DE TO DEVELOP TO THE FULL THE POTENTIALITIES OF EVERY CHILD AT SCHOOL, IN ACCORD ALWAYS WITH THE GENERAL GOOD OF THE COMMUNITY OF VEICH ME IS A MEMDEN,»
HE SAID THERE WERE TUO EXTREME VIEWS OF WHAT WERE THE FUNCTIONS OF SCHOOL. THE FIRST VIEN WAS THAT IT SHOULD SOLVE ALL PROBLEMS OF SOCIETY- WHILE THE SECOND WAS TO GET CHILDREN THROUGH EXAMINATIONS.
MR. TOPLEY POINTED OUT THAT THESE WERE POLAR EXTREMITIES. THE CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD SCHOOL WERE NOT DIFFICULT TO RECOGNISE SINCE IT SHOULD HAVE THE FOLLOWING ENDS IN VIEW:

TO INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT-

KNOWLEDGE, INTERESTS AND ATTITUDES OF MIND WHICH THEY WILL NEED FOR LIVING A FULL AND USEFUL LIFE- AND
* TO SET STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOUR, EFFORT AND ATTAINMENT BY
WHICH THEY CAN MEASURE THEIR ÖVN CONDUCT.
CHILDREN IN THESE GOOD SCHOOLS «WILL SHOW THE ENERGY WHICH COMES FROM THE NATURAL FLOW OF VITALITY, THE KNOWLEDGE WHICH RESULTS FROM THE FREE PLAY CF INTELLIGENCE, THE EVIDENT CARE AND THOROUGH- NESS WHICH ARISE FROM A RIGHT SENSE OF VALUES, AND THE HAPPINESS WHICH ACCOMPANIES THE FEELING THAT THEY ARE DOING THINGS WORTH DOING AND DOING THEM WELL,* THE DIRECTOR SAID.
MR. TOPLEY STRESSED THAT MODERN EDUCATION MUST ADAPT ITSELF TO MODERN NEEDS.
