CALL FOR DEVELOPMENT OF TEACHING CENTRES INTO RESOURCE CENTRES

FOR TEACHING METHODS

THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION (PROFESSIONAL), KR. HO NGA-MING TODAY URGED MORE TEACHERS TO VISIT THE TWO MATHEMATICS TEACHING CENTRES WHICH THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT WOULD LIKE TO SEE DEVELOPED INTO RESOURCE CENTRES FOR TEACHING METHODS, CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND PROJECTS.

SPEAKING AT THE OPENING OF THE SEMINAR AND EXHIBITIS. ↑ MARK THE INAUGURATION OF THE CENTRES, MR. HO SAID ULTIMATAY, WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THESE CENTRES BECOME A RENDEZVOUS FOR TEACHERS SO THAT THEY CAN FREELY EXCHANGE THEIR EXPERIENCES AND IDEAS IN A CONGENIAL ATMOSPHERE.

*WE FIND THAT MANY TEACHERS, AFTER ATTENDING OUR WORKSHOPS HAVE REALLY TRIED OUT THE IDEAS IN THEIR CLASSES, WITH THE RESULT THAT SOME ELEVEN PRIMARY SCHOOLS HAVE STARTED USING ACTIVITY METHODS SINCE 1972.+

PUPILS IN THESE EXPERIMENTAL CLASSES, HE SAID, SHOWED A LIVELY INTEREST IN THE USE OF EQUIPMENT AND AN EAGERNESS TO LEARN.

THERE WAS ALSO A MUCH BUSIER AND HAPPIER ATMOSPHERE IN THE CLASSROOM, AND BETTER UNDERSTANDING, A MORE INQUISITIVE MIND AND GREATER SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY RESULT.

THE DEPUTY DIRECTOR POINTED OUT THAT WORKSHOPS AND TEACHING CENTRES COULD ONLY SOLVE PART OF THE PROBLEM.

HE STRESSED THAT TEXTBOOKS WOULD HAVE TO BE GEARED TO THESE NEW APPROACHES. REFERENCE BOOKS AND BACKGROUND READING MATERIALS WOULD ALSO BE REQUIRED.

MR. HO ADDED +WE WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SEE MORE MANUFACTURERS INTERESTED IN MAKING USEFUL AND INEXPENSIVE MATHEMATICS EQUIPMENT. ALL IN ALL. CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT IS A COMMITMENT WHICH NEEDS THE TOTAL INVOLVEMENT OF THOSE WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE QUALITY OF EDUCATION. IT IS ONLY THROUGH SUCH JOINT EFFORTS THAT WE WILL SEE AN IMPROVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS EDUCATION.+

HE CALLED ON TEACHERS OF MATHEMATICS TO ENCOURAGE PUPILS TO EXPERIMENT, TO THINK,

TO THINK, TO QUESTION AND TO FIND SOLUTIONS. LEARNING WOULD THEN BECOME AN ACTIVE AND CREATIVE PROCESS AS WELL AS AN ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE.
