FURTHER EXTENSION OF SHATIN TREATMENT WORKS GETTING READY FOR HIGH ISLAND WATER

THE SHATIN TREATMENT WORKS IS BEING EXTENDED TO COPE WITH THE RAW WATER WHICH WILL COME IN FROM THE HIGH ISLAND WATER SCHEME.
TO INCREASE THE PLANT'S TREATING CAPACITY, TWO NEW CLARIFIER TANKS WILL BE INSTALLED AT THE SITE. WORK IS NOW GOING ON IN EXCAVATING TWO LARGE CRATERS AT THE SHATIN TREATMENT WORKS TO MAKE WAY FOR THE TWO CLARIFIER TANKS.
THE SIZES OF THE TWO NEW TANKS ARE IDENTICAL TO THOSE OF THE EXISTING ONES, EACH HAS A DIAMETER OF 172 FEET AND A DEPTH OF 24 FEET.
ON COMPLETION, THEY WILL BRING TO NINE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CLARIFIER TANKS IN OPERATION AT THE SHATIN TREATMENT WORKS. THIS, TOGETHER WITH THE UP-RATING OF THE FILTER BEDS WHICH IS CURRENTLY IN HAND, WILL RAISE THE CAPACITY OF THE TREATMENT WORKS FROM THE PRESENT 175 MILLION GALLONS A DAY TO 240 MILLION GALLONS A DAY.
AT PRESENT, THE TREATMENT WORKS HANDLES WATER DRAWN FROM THE PLOVER COVE RESERVOIR SYSTEM AND CHINA.
WITH ITS INCREASED TREATMENT CAPACITY, THE SHATIN PLANT WILL RANK HIGH AMONG THE WORLD'S LARGEST TREATMENT WORKS.
THE TWO NEW CLARIFIER TANKS AND THE UP-RATED FILTERS ARE SCHEDULED TO BECOME OPERATIONAL BY THE SUMMER OF 1976 WHEN THE HIGH ISLAND RESERVOIR WILL START TO YIELD WATER,
THE ENGINEER AT THE SITE, MR. D.A. HOWARTH, SAID TODAY THAT ABOUT 80 PER CENT OF THE EXCAVATION WORK WHICH BEGAN ON OCTOBER 14 WAS NOW COMPLETED.
HE POINTED OUT THAT THE PROGRESS OF THE WORK HAD BEEN EXCELLENT IN SPITE OF THE LOSS OF SEVERAL WORK DAYS DUE TO TYPHOON CARMEN AND TROPICAL STORM ELAINE IN LATE OCTOBER AND TROPICAL STORM IRMA EARLY THIS MONTH.
DURING EXCAVATION, BLASTING WAS EMPLOYED IN ADDITION TO THE USE OF BULLDOZERS BECAUSE OF THE ROCKY STRUCTURE OF THE SITE BENEATH THE GROUND SURFACE.
MR. HOWARTH SAID, +WE HAVE TO USE ELECTRONIC VIBRATION RECORDING INSTRUMENTS TO MONITOR THE EFFECT OF BLASTING TO ENSURE THAT NO DANGER WOULD BE CAUSED TO THE EXISTING CLARIFIERS AND INSTALLATIONS OF THE TREATMENT WORKS, WHICH ARE VERY CLOSE TO THE EXCAVATION SITE. +
