ANOTHER SHOME CONTROL, ARIA

Cheung Sha Wan and Sham Shui Po are gazetted today as a smoke

control area, bringing to fit the number of ereas in fleng Kong in which

factories or other fuel voers een be fined for pregeðinn recto pollution

limite.

Four other areas have already been declared ameko control creas

Kym Tong in 1960, Sha Tin in 1952, North Point in 1964 and Tsuen Wan last

year.

Under today's gazette notice, members of the public in Cheung Sha

Wan and Sham Shui Po are given 21 days to make recommendations or objections

to the declaration, which is due to become effective on April 16, 1974.

Under the Clean Air Ordinance, an occupier of any premices within

the smoke control area who operates a face, oven or chiroy omitting

dark smoke for more than six minutes in a period of four hours, or pere than

three minutes at any one time, ia lizblo to a 62,000 fine. Ee can also be

fined $50 for every 15 minutes during which the offence continues

The Labour Department's Smoke Abatement Adviser, Mr. Ken Higginson,

said today the emission of knoko darker than the legal limits was simply a

result of inefficient combustion techniques, which also unnecessarily increased

fuel bills.
