PRICE OF SAND GOES UP BY $7
The Public Works Department announced today that the price of
sand at the government sand depots has been increased from $16.50 to
$23.50 a cubic yard.
(iday).
The new price will apply to all sand paid on or after today
A spokesman for the department explained that the price increase
reflected a higher rate of compensation the Chinese authorities requested
for sand from China, as well as the higher prices for a new contract for
the supply of sand to government depots.
The former rate of $16.50 a cubic yard has been effective since
1970 for the duration of the previous contract which expired. "It re-
maine the government's policy not to recover more than the cost of buying
and selling the sand," the spokesman added.
He estimated that the effect on building costs would only
represent, at the most, an increase of from 0.4 per cent to 1 per cent
depending on the complexity of the building.
