RESULTS OF ANTI CRIME CAMPAIGN "ENCOURAGING"
The Colonial Secretary, the Hon. Sir Hugh Norman-Walker, today
described the immediate results of the Fight Violent Crime Campaign as
"encouraging".
He said the upward trend of robberies has been arrested. From a
daily average of 25 a few months ago, the number has dropped to 15 at the
present time.
"We seem to be back at least to the situation at the beginning of
1972 and public confidence in our ability to deal with crine has grown
significantly," Sir Hugh added.
He said he believed there was every reason to congratulate the police
on the way in which they were meeting the challenge and the Fight Violent
Crime Committee.
"But," he stressed, "what we have witnessed so far is merely the
opening skirmish in a prolonged battle. I know the police recognise this;
and I can assure you that having grasped the initiative, they will not let it
go."
Sir Hugh was replying to a question in the Legislative Council by
the Hon. P.C. Woo on the current results and future plans of the campaign.
