"Broadcasters should play it a different way especially where news

'is concerned," Mr. Hawthorne said.

On the whole, he said he would prefer "to cool a controversy rather

than add fuel to the fire."

"Understanding is at the root of good broadcasting and compassion

shouldn't be too far away," he added.
