automatic vehicle inspection centre to cope with the regular inspection

of all motor vehicles.

The Financial Secretary, the Hon. C.P. Haddon-Cave, who

was replying to a question raised by the Hon. Szeto Wai in the Legislative Council, said at present there was no statutory requirement that motor

vehicles should be inspected on a regular basis. of road safety, powers should be sought to enforce such regular inspections.

Mr. Szeto had asked whether the Government would consider the

installation of automatic testing equipment in its existing vehicle inspection centres to speed up testing and enable compulsory periodic

inspection of all motor vehicles.

Mr. Haddon-Cave said that as it was physically impossible to

expand the existing centres, consideration was being given to the setting up of a new centre, possibly a semi-automatic inspection centre.
