of Labour and as Acting Secretary for Chinese Affairs in addition on a number

of occasions since June, 1955. He served as an Official Member of Legislative

Council on a number of occasions and was appointed an Official Member of

Executive Council in 1961.

The Hon. T.D. Sorby

Mr. Terence Dare. Sorby is Director of Commerce and Industry and has

been appointed an Official Member of the Legislative Council during the

absence on leave of the Honourable D.R. Holmes, C.B.E., M.C. Mr. Sorby came

to Hong Kong in November, 1945 as a Major in the Civil Affairs Unit of the

British Military Administration. On demobilisation, he joined the Hong Kong

Civil Service as a Cadet Officer in July, 1946, and served first in the

Establishment Office of the Colonial Secretariat and then in the Labour

Department. He attended the Joint Services Staff College from August, 1950

to March, 1951. Returning to Hong Kong, he served in the Finance Branch of

the Colonial Secretariat until appointed an Assistant Director of Commerce

and Industry in April 1953, continuing in this post with brief intermissions

until July, 1959. In August 1955 he went to Canada on a United Nations

fellowship to study industrial development and trade promotion techniques.

He was a member of the Hong Kong trade mission to the Caribbean countries in

1958, and was an official delegate to the Frankfurt and Viera trade fairs,

Mr. Sorby served in the Establishment Office during 1960 and 1961 until

appointed Deputy Economic Secretary in April of that year, when he was also

promoted to Administrative Officer, Staff Grade B, On return from leave in

March, 1963 he was appointed Commissioner of Labour until transferred to the

Commerce and Industry Department as Deputy Director in October, 1963.
