Transmits copy of correspondence rela- tive to the insertion of a clause in next year's code providing a bonus for teachers who have been through the course of lectures successfully.

Transmits a précis of replies to circular despatch of 7th October, 1903, show- ing the work done in the teaching of the rudiments of hygiene; indicates general lines upon which instruction might proceed and requests a report at the beginning of each year showing what progress has been made.

Fears it would be useless to attempt to introduce the scheme in No. 4 in the present state of the schools, but he hopes shortly to introduce a better system of education and will then bear the suggestions in mind.

Reports that a course of weekly lectures on hygiene has just been concluded and that it is intended to hold an examination in the subject for school teachers; doubts whether set lessons in the schools would be a very sound method, but teachers have been ordered to impress upon children the simple laws of health.

Reports instruction given during the past two years; proposes to translate Dr. Collett's book Into the Ibo and Yoruba languages; requests approval of the purchase of lanterns and slides to illustrate lectures.

States, in reply to No. 4, that there are no Government institutions in which hygiene could be taught; expresses doubt whether a Government grant for such a purpose would be justi- fiable under present circumstances, and suggests that the matter should be taken up some two years hence; transmite copy of correspondence with Bishop Tucker.

Acknowledges receipt of No. 9, and states that the Crown Agents will take the necessary steps for the purchase of lanterns and slides.

Forwards copies of Dr. Dickson's "Notes on Lectures on Elementary Hygiene."

Forwards report adopted by the Board of Education recommending the pur- chase of 200 copies of Professor Simpson's book, and the institution of classes for teachers.

Reports on the progress of the teaching of sanitation in the schools of the Colony.

Reports that the Superintending Medical Officer has undertaken the preparation of a manual of hygiene for use in the schools of the Colony.

Reports progress made in 1905 in teach- ing the rudiments of hygiene; a course of lectures for teachers, and a syllabus for the systematic teaching of hygiene in elementary schools are in preparation.
