Nathan on the subject, which was received shortly after the dispatch of the telegram in question, together with a copy of a telegraphic reply from the Governor intimating that no further information is available.

We have the honour to request that His Majesty's Government will put forward and represent the above-mentioned claims against the Imperial Russian Government, and press for a full and early settlement of the same, as our clients and constituents are considerably embarrassed, and in some cases seriously distressed, owing to the heavy losses inflicted upon them in consequence of the sinking of the "St. Kilda."

I concur in the suggestion made in the third paragraph of this letter, and I have noted with much pleasure Lord Lansdowne's appreciation of the manner in which these difficult cases have been dealt with, which reflects high credit on your administration.

IN continuation of my Confidential despatch of the 26th ultimo,§ on the subject of the sinking of the steam-ship "St. Kilda " by the Russian Volunteer ship "Dnieper," I have now the honour to transmit a copy of a letter from Messrs. Bradley and Co., giving covers to claims for losses, expenses, and damages, amounting to 23,0921. 10s. 9d., sustained by the charterers, native crew, and shippers, in consequence of the sinking of the vessel, and to request that you will be good enough to move His Majesty's Government to 'press for an early settlement of these claims.

September 27, 1905. WITH reference to your Confidential despatch of the 31st July last, on the subject of claims in connection with the sinking of the steam-ship "St. Kilda," I have the honour to enclose, in original,§ a claim sent in by Messrs. Robert Jack and Company, a Chinese firm of stevedores and ships' chandlers trading in this Colony.

2. This is the only response which has been received to a notification published in the "Government Gazette" of the 8th instant, requesting all persons who had claims to lay in respect of the sinking of the British steam-ship "St. Kilda," to send in such claims to the Colonial Secretary on or before the 20th September, 1905.
