No. 170.
COLONIAL OFFICE to INDIA OFFICE.
SIR,
Downing Street, November 16, 1904. I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Lyttelton to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 10th of November,* and to ask you to convey his thanks to Mr. Secretary Brodrick for the contribution of £500 a year for five years which he has decided to make from Indian revenues to the general fund for the promotion of further research into the origin and propagation of tropical diseases.
2. Mr. Lyttelton readily concurs in Mr. Brodrick's suggestion that two repre- sentatives of India should be added to the Board which is being formed for the purpose of advising him as to the disposal of the fund. The other members of the Board are:-
The Right Honourable Sir J. West Ridgeway, G.C.M.G., K.C.B., K.C.S.I.
(Chairman).
Sir R. Moor, K.C.M.G. (late High Commissioner of Southern Nigeria). Sir T. Barlow, Bt., M.D., K.C.V.O.
Sir M. Foster, M.P., K.C.B., F.R.S. (representing the Royal Society).
Sir P. Manson, M.D., K.C.M.G., F.R.Š. (Medical Adviser to the Colonial
Office).
Mr. C. P. Lucas C.B. Mr. H. J. Read
1
(representing the Colonial Office).
3. With regard to the last paragraph of your letter, the question of the title of the fund was discussed at the preliminary meeting which was held on the 1st of November, and at which a representative of the India Office was provisionally present, and it was considered that on the whole it would be more convenient to use the short title, "Tropical Diseases Research Fund." As Mr. Brodrick does not wish to urge the adoption of the title suggested in your letter, Mr. Lyttelton, who had already given his approval to the above title, proposes to let matters stand as they are at present.
SIR,

LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD to COLONIAL OFFICE. (Received November 18, 1904.)
[Copy to Governor, December 28, 1904. No. 187. L.F.] [Answered by No. 176.]
Local Government Board, Whitehall, S.W., November 17, 1904.
I AM directed by the Local Government Board to advert to their letter of the 9th June last, enclosing a copy of a letter received from the Royal Society and of the Board's reply thereto, relative to the proposed employment of one of the Medical Inspectors of this Department in connexion with an investigation of Malta fever.
The Board direct me to state, for the information of Mr. Secretary Lyttelton, that Dr. Johnstone has been engaged on the work referred to, and that during his absence they obtained the services of a substitute. The latter was employed from the 30th June to 23rd October last, inclusive, and the amount paid to him in respect of salary, at the rate of £500 per annum, was £158 0s. 7d. The Board would be much obliged if, in accordance with the arrangements sanctioned by the Lords Commissioners of His Majesty's Treasury, this amount were transferred to the credit of the Vote for this Department at the office of the Paymaster-General.
