limited and their population proportionately very large, there, is obviously no room here for immigrants.

The Falkland Islands off the extreme South-east of America have an area of some 7,500 square miles, and a population of under 2,000, of whom a great number are Scotch. The islands consist in the main of bleak moorland, well adapted for sheep and cattle grazing, and the climate, though severe and windy, is healthy.

The greater part of the land of the Colony is leased in large blocks for sheep farming, which is the chief industry, and the trade is in great measure in the hands of the Falkland Islands Company [address, 39A, Gracechurch Street, E.C.].

In the Pacific: the Fiji Islands are a tropical, sugar-growing colony, with an area of 7,435 square miles and a population of 127,000. Out-door work here is done by coloured labour; there is little opening for European immigrants without capital at any time, and latterly the trade and finances of the islands have been in a very depressed state.

British New Guinea, which takes in the south-east of the great island of New Guinea, and covers an area of some 89,000 miles, is tropical, not very healthy, and unsuited for European emigrants, especially as, at present, no land concessions are granted.

In most of the colonies above mentioned Government appoint- ments are filled either by the Governor or by the Secretary of State for the Colonies, and land is as a rule sold at public auction.
