Mr. Cox (now Sir Charles Cox, K.C.M.G.), who had been Secretary and Registrar from 1872, was appointed to be Chancellor in 1877 under this Statute; and the Sovereign has recently been graciously pleased to approve of his being appointed a Knight Commander with rank as Senior Knight Commander, under the 10th Article of the Statute of 1832 previously referred to.

The Officers are declared to be servants of the Sovereign's Household, and are eligible for appoint- ment to any of the Classes of the Order, and are to enjoy all privileges and exemptions belonging by right or custom to the Esquires of the Sovereign or to the Gentlemen of Her Privy Chamber.

It is provided by these Statutes that the custody of the Seal is to be confided to the Chan- cellor, and that it shall be affixed to all Statutes and other instruments and writings of the Order.

Return of Insignia.

It has always been a standing provision of the Statutes that on the decease or promotion of a Member, the Insignia should be returned to the Officers of the Order, and by the Statutes of 1877 all persons admitted to the Order are required to execute a formal Covenant for that purpose.
