17. 8.5.
"Ranee."-The Committee agreed that the insurance policies which had been forwarded by Messrs. Glanvill, Enthoven and Company need not be referred to Messrs. Waltons and Company, and they thought that they should be sent to the Assistant Paymaster-General for custody.
18. Tonnage for Jamaica.--The Committee agreed that the Governor of Jamaica might be informed that there was no prospect of another prize ship being sent to the Colony.
19. s.s. “ Barenfels,” s.s. “Gutenfels." It was agreed that copies of the state- ments referred to in paragraph 2 of the banks' letters of undertakings should be sent to the Admiralty and to Alexandria, and the banks should be asked to forward copies to the Secretary for distribution.
20.
8.S. “Koerber.”—The agreement with Messrs. Arthur Holland and Company for the management of this ship was confirmed.
21. Other Ships.-The Committee also discussed the position of the 8.8. "Heinz" had "Rooke" and the s.8. "Syra." The Secretary reported that the s.v. been sold for £11,150.

22. Registration of Ships requisitioned by the Military Authorities at
Andros Alexandria.-The Secretary read a letter from the Transport Department, and
Rabenfels," and was instructed to reply that the "Aenne Rickmers,” could not be permanently registered in Egypt, and that the Committee would there- fore take steps to see to their registration in the United Kingdom.

23. 8.8. Emir."-The Secretary read a letter from Messrs. Churchill and Sim as to the price which they had been offered for the sale of 5,986 pieces of cedar. He was instructed to inquire whether this consignment could not be put up to auction.
"As regards the suggested release of two cases of trophies, the Secretary was instructed to reply to Messrs. Thomas Cook and Sons in accordance with the recommendations made by Messrs. Waltons and Company.
24. Brokers' Charges.-The Committee approved of a uniform fee of £10 10s. Od. for valuations effected on their instructions of prize ships which it might be decided to hand over to the Transport Department. The Secretary was Instructed to inform Messrs. Lachlan and Messrs. Kellock accordingly.
25. 8.8. Reichenfels."-The Committee recommended that a telegram should be sent to South Africa to inquire what arrangements had been made for loading this ship and when she had finished her discharge. The Transport Department were to be informed that these inquiries were being made, and that a further communication would be sent later in reply to the questions put in their letter.
26. S.8. 'Gibraltar.”—The Committee approved the payment to Messrs, Kellock of their account for the valuation of this ship.

27. Turkish Sailing Vessels at Alexandria.-The Committee considered a telegram from Alexandria stating that eight ships, of which five had been con- The Committee demned, had been requisitioned by the local naval authorities. recommended that the Foreign Office should instruct the Marshal at Alexandria that he might sell sailing vessels not required for naval purposes as and when they were condemned.
28. Railway Material at Alexandria.--Having regard to the terms of a tele- gram from Alexandria on this subject the Committee instructed the Secretary to inform the War Office that if they wished the condemned railway material to be kept they must pay the expenses of its storage in the meantime.

THE FIFTY-THird Meeting of the Committee was held at the Colonial Office on Thursday, the 27th of May, 1915, at 3.15 p.m.

1. The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed.

2. Steamships Adolphus" and 'George R."-The Secretary read to the Committee letters from the Transport Department asking for the transfer of these ships, but no decision was arrived at in the matter, as the Committee thought it better to await the decision of His Majesty's Government upon the proposals con- The ships were to be sent to the Tyne, tained in the Fourth Interim Report.* but no action was to be taken to fix them for the present.
The Committee agreed that the Admiralty might be charged the contract rate of 98. per measurement ton on the rope and canvas which had been carried from Gibraltar.
3. Steamships “Hamm and "Apolda.”—Mr. Tennyson informed the Com mittee that an agreement had been completed for the carriage of the sleepers from Australia to South Africa. The Committee approved of a letter which he proposed to send to the Federal Steam Navigation Company upon the subject. It was under- stood that the charter party would be altered so as to provide that delivery should be taken as fast as the ship could be discharged.
The Committee then discussed the question of insuring the outward cargo from South Africa against fire after discharge In view of the objections raised by the insurance companies to the proposal that the cover should include all cargo not ultimately proved to be enemy cargo, the Committee agreed that all the cargo should be insured irrespective of what might be the ultimate decision of the Prize Court upon particular consignments.
The Committee approved the repairs which it was understood were required to the s.8. "Apolda."

4. 8.3. Lorenzo."-The Committee discussed the terms of the charter of this ship to the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. It was understood that half the cargo belonged to the Government and that it would pay no freight to the Company, and on this understanding the Committee approved of the ship being chartered at a rate of 8s. 6d. a ton a month on the gross register.
5. 8.8. "Kawak."--The Committee understood that it was not possible for them to place the charge for canal dues upon the charterers.

6. S.S. Concadoro."-Mr. Holt informed the Committee that the ship would be discharged at Rouen at the end of the month and that she could be back in London about the 2nd of June. Having regard to the notice which it was desired to give to the French Government, the Committee decided to fix the date of the sale for the 22nd of June. Mr. Holt was to ascertain whether there would be time for a voyage from Newcastle to London to be arranged. Messrs. Lachlan were to be asked to prepare and forward notices of the sale.
7. Conditions of Sale.-Mr. Malkin informed the Committee that all the requisite assurances had been given by the French Government except the guarantee for the payment of interest in the event of deferred payment. The Foreign Office were asking the French Government to give this guarantee.
