3. I have decided to ask the Government of
the Gold Coast
to contribute a Southern Nigeria sum of £50 towards the amount of £250, and I shall be glad if you will [Gold Coast, propose the necessary vote to the Legislative Council] [Southern Nigeria, take the Recessary steps in the matter].

MR. CHAMBERLAIN to GOVERNOR SIR D. WILSON.

SIR,
Downing Street, March 27, 1902. I HAVE the honour to transmit to you the accompanying copy of a despatch,* from which you will learn what steps were taken in the year 1898 to provide funds to enable investigations into the cause and cure of malaria to be carried out by a Commission appointed jointly by the Royal Society and myself.
2. This Commission has been continuously engaged in carrying out its investi- gations since that date, but you will see from the letter of which a copy is enclosed† that a small additional sum is required in order to cover the cost of completing an experiment to which the Malaria Investigation Committee attach great importance.
3. In view of the depressed condition of the finances of the Colony at the time, I did not ask the Government of British Honduras to make any contribution towards the cost of the Malaria Commission on the previous occasion, but, in view of the recent improvement in its financial position, I think that it may well contribute a sum of £50 towards the additional amount now required, and I shall be glad if you will propose the necessary vote to the Legislative Council.
I have, &c.,
J. CHAMBERLAIN.

MR. CHAMBERLAIN to GOVERNOR SIR C. BRUCE.

(No. 79.)
SIR,
Downing Street, March 27, 1902. I HAVE the honour to transmit to you, with reference to my despatch, No. 266, of the 25th of November, 1898, the accompanying copy of a letter from the Malaria Investigation Committee, and to inform you that I am asking some of the Colonial Governments to assist in providing the additional funds referred to in the last paragraph of that letter.
2. In order to provide for unforeseen contingencies I have thought it well to fix the amount to be contributed by those Governments at £250, instead of the sum of £175 contemplated in the last paragraph of Sir M. Foster's letter.
3. In my despatch, referred to above, I asked the Government of Mauritius to contribute a sum of £150 towards the cost of the Malaria Investigation Commission, and stated that I should have asked for a somewhat larger grant if the financial condition of the Colony had been more prosperous.
4. In view of the increased prosperity of the Island, and of the fact that the Colonies of the Gold Coast, Lagos, and the Niger Coast Protectorate have each made a contribution of £1,000 towards the cost of the Commission, I think that the Mauritius Government may be fairly asked to contribute a further sum of £100, and I shall be glad if you will propose a vote for this amount to the Legislative Council.
