Downing Street, April 4, 1900. I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to transmit to you, to be laid before His Royal Highness the President of the Royal Patriotic Fund Commission, copy of an extract* from a despatch, in which the Governor of Newfoundland reports that it is the desire of the subscribers that the amounts which have been or are being collected in the Colony for the benefit of the wives and widows of those who have fallen or may fall in South Africa should be devoted to the more immediate needs of such persons, and not invested as part of the ordinary Patriotic Fund.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 9th ultimo * informing me that the public subscriptions that have been collected in St. Vin- cent in aid of the sufferers from the war in South Africa amounted on the 6th of March to £225, and to express my gratification at this evidence of the loyal and patriotic feelings of the people of St. Vincent.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 10th ultimo, † enclosing a press report of a public meeting which has been held in Grenada, to express sympathy with the sufferers from the war in South Africa, and to further a scheme in aid of the Transvaal War Fund, which has been opened at the Mansion House by the Lord Mayor of London, and stating that the contributions received in the Colony for this object so far have exceeded £400.
I have received with much gratification this evidence of the loyal and patriotic feelings of the inhabitants of Grenada.

I HAVE the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 28th of February last, and of Administrator King-Harman's despatch of the 9th ultimo, § onclosing a Colonial Bank draft for a further sum of £106 12s. 9d., which completes the subscription raised in St. Lucia towards the relief of the sufferers from the war in South Africa, and to inform you that the whole amount subscribed in the Colony, viz., £406 12s. Id., will be disposed of as may be desired on receipt of the further despatch expected in reply to my despatch of the 6th of February last. ¶ I have, &c.,
