SIERRA LEONE.

J. CHAMBERLAIN.

COLONIAL OFFICE to THE LIVERPOOL SCHOOL OF TROPICAL DISEASES. SIR,

I'AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to acknowledge the receipt of your

Downing Street, July 1, 1899. letter of the 14th of June* relating to the Research Expedition organised by the Liver- pool School of Tropical Diseases for the purpose of investigating the causes of Malaria and other tropical diseases.

2. Mr. Chamberlain has learned with great satisfaction that the Expedition is being sent, and appreciates the energy and public spirit shewn by, the Committee of the School in the matter. He regrets, however, that he is unable to make any pecuniary grant in the present instance towards the cost of the Expedition, as the funds collected for the Malaria Investigation Commission which has been sent out by the Colonial Office and Royal Society, and members of which will very shortly visit West Africa, will barely suffice for the purposes of the Commission, but the local authorities at Sierra Leone will be instructed to give every facility to the work of the Expedition.

I amı, &c.,
