(No.. 92/99.) MY LORD,
In
Premier's Office, Hobart, March 22, 1899. REFERRING to the Secretary of State's circular despatch, dated 15th December last (returned herewith), I have the honour to inform you that the subject of the estab lishment of a School of Tropical Medicine in London was referred to the Medical Section of the Royal Society in Tasmania, and to the Local Branch of the British Medical Association in Launceston, for consideration by their respective Boards. reply I beg to inform you that the former Society have decided that as there is no endemic malaria or tropical disease in Tasmania, the subject is more one for tropical colonies to deal with; but the members have agreed to assist the object in view by forwarding "specimens" as opportunity affords. It was the general opinion of the Board that a School of Tropical Medicine would be of incalculable benefit to medical officers sent out to fill Colonial appointments where malaria and tropical diseases are prevalent.
The Secretary of the Local Branch of the British Medical Association in Laun- ceston acknowledged the receipt of a copy of the despatch, and in reply stated that, whilst approving of the scheme for the establishment of such a school, the Launceston Branch was prevented by the geographical position of Tasmania from taking any active part in contributing pathological material, &c., to the school.
I have, &c.,
