3. It has, however, been since suggested that before Blantyre is finally selected as the scene of operations, it would be well to consult Mr. Alfred Sharpe, C.B., the Commissioner and Consul-General for the British Central Africa Protectorate, and I am to ask you to be good enough to invite him to communicate with this Office on the subject, explaining that it is desired to know in the first place whether he considers that Blantyre would be a suitable place for carrying on the investigation in question, and, in the second place, whether, if he considers that it is suitable, he would be good enough to co-operate with this Office and with the Royal Society in securing for the experts who are going out suitable accommodation and all reasonable facilities. The matter is somewhat pressing, and I am to ask that you will be so good as to give it early attention.

COLONIAL OFFICE to the AFRICAN LAKES CORPORATION, LIMITED.

[Answered by No. 72.]

SIR,

Downing Street, October 3, 1898. YOUR letter to the Foreign Office of the 29th ultimo,* inviting the three experts who have been selected by the Secretary of State for the Colonies and the Royal Society to investigate malaria in Central Africa to attend a meeting on the subject at your offices in Glasgow on Wednesday next, has been forwarded to this Office.

3. It is noted that your Corporation are good enough to offer to defray their travelling expenses to Glasgow.

3. One of the three experts is not at present in this country, but the other two are being communicated with and will be asked to reply direct to you.

4. While thanking you for your courteous offer and further promise of co-opera- tion, I am directed by the Secretary of State to enquire whether the Corporation would be able to arrange on reasonable terms for the accommodation of the three enquirers when they reach Blantyre.

5. They will not go out at once, as two of them will undertake a short prelimi- nary study in Italy, and the third will visit India, but it is desired to secure in advance of their arrival suitable accommodation, and Mr. Sharpe, Her Majesty's Commissioner for the British Central Africa Protectorate, has suggested the advisability of commu- nicating with you on the subject.

6. The Secretary of State would be obliged if you would be good enough to consider the matter, and, if you view it favourably, suggest on what terms for, say, one year, you would be prepared to provide suitable board, lodging, and any other necessaries, bearing in mind that the enquirers should be within easy reach of a hospital
