officers to be trained with as little delay as possible, instructions have been given to the Society's architect to proceed with the foundations, and to submit to the meeting in October tenders for the erection of the superstructure.

The Committee will welcome a representative of the Colonial Office on the Board of Management. It may be found necessary, to give him a legal status under the Society's Act of Parliament (3° Gul. IV., cap. 9), that he should be an annual subscriber of one guinea to the funds of the Corporation.

I DULY received your letter of 11th March last, conveying Mr. Chamberlain's views on the subject of the necessity for special education in tropical medicine in the medical schools of the country.

The subject has now been considered by the Governing Board, who have directed me to inform you that arrangements are being made in this school for the purpose referred to.

Mr. Chamberlain desires me to convey to you his thanks for having so readily con- sented to preside over the Committee, and to express his appreciation of the careful and able manner in which you and your colleagues have performed the task which was en- trusted to you.

Mr. Chamberlain has caused a similar communication to be addressed to the other members of the Committee.

Westminster Hospital Medical School, July 15, 1898. In reply to your letter of the 12th instant,* I have to inform you that the School of Medicine Committee took the subject of your communications (March 11† and July 12*) into consideration at their meetings in April and in July, and I am directed to inform you that the lectures on medicine at this school have always included the diseases incidental to tropical climates, but that they consider the establishment of a special school for the teaching and observation of "Tropical diseases" is a desideratum in London.

I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 7th instant, † stating that the Council of the Royal Society had re- solved to appoint a committee for the purpose of directing the investigations which it is proposed to make into the origin, the transmission, and the possible preventives and remedies of tropical diseases, and, further, to make an initial grant of £300 towards the expenses of such investigations.

Mr. Chamberlain has received this announcement with much pleasure, and de- sires to thank the President and Council for their ready co-operation.

He has selected Mr. C. P. Lucas, Assistant Under Secretary of State, and Dr. Patrick Manson to represent this Department, and he would ask the Council to fix an early date for the first conference between the committee which they have appointed and the Colonial Office representatives.

I am to enquire whether it would be more convenient for the members of the com- mittee to meet in this Office or in the rooms of the Royal Society at Burlington House.
