Officers must be good horsemen, and are obliged to acquire a colloquial knowledge of one of the languages of the country- Turkish and Greek-within eighteen months from the date of their appointment.
Vacancies in the post of Local Commandant are almost invariably filled by the transfer of officers who have rendered good service in other Colonies, or by the promotion of Inspectors.
Inspectors are usually selected locally.
