Subject-Flogging of Hausas.
I attach, for the information of his Excellency, two letters I have received with regard to the flogging of men under my command by officers in the Hinterland without the presence of a Medical Officer. This is totally against all regulations, and must be stopped. I regret to notice that a great deal too much flogging takes place in the Hinterland.

I HAVE the honour to report, for the information of the Inspector-General, that on the 8th instant, No. 2181 Private Mahama Banufe received twelve lashes for stealing corn from the guard room, and that on the 10th instant No. 2099 Private Mama Borugu received twelve lashes for neglect of duty in not reporting an attempt to steal money
from the guard room, and allowing a prisoner to escape.
2. There was no other officer here to assent to this punishment.

I have the honour to inform you that I have to-day had No. 2032 Private Bethinh Dollo flogged. Captain and Assistant-Inspector M. Hawtrey was consulted first before the punishment was awarded, and concurred in sentence.
