The Secretary of State.] The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. Goschen, is very anxious to have an opportunity to discuss the question of naval defence with the Conference, and of course he will be able to give us much more definitely than we could get the other day, the views of the Government on the whole subject.

Mr. Reid.] I think the views of the Admiralty on one point is that they want perfect freedom, and, on the other hand, a larger contribution.

The Secretary of State.] I think it is possible that he may have a different proposal to make.

Sir John Forrest.] He was very strong at the dinner the other day.

The Secretary of State.] I am asking him to be present, and I am asking him to come at 12 o'clock, when all the Premiers will be present, on Thursday.

The Secretary of State.] Perhaps you might deal with the question of the date of the departure of the mails. You have all had a copy of the Post- inaster-General's memorandum* with regard to the date of the Australian mail service. I should like to know what your views are with regard to the Postmaster-General's application.

Mr. G. H. Reid.] I have a minute. Our Deputy Postmaster-General is in London just now. I am sorry he has not had the opportunity of seeing the

Postmaster-General's memorandum.
