but the time he can give to this work is limited, and it must be many months yet before the manuscript will be completed.
When the Abstract of Plant Pest Legislation was prepared for the last Entomological Conference, a suggestion was made that in about five years' time another edition might be brought out. It is perhaps questionable, however, whether the demand really justifies the expenditure involved. Some 200 copies of the original issue were distributed gratis to the contributing Governments, but the total sales have amounted to not more than 52, only two copies having been sold during the past year. As a matter of fact, information as to legislation passed since the publication of the Abstract can be obtained without undue difficulty by consulting the indices of the various volumes of the Review of Applied Entomology. Mr. Emile Hegh, of Brussels, has recently visited England in connexion with the preparation of a new and amplified French edition of the book on Tsetse Flies by Major E. E. Austen and himself. Of our English edition 80 copies were issued free and 386 copies have been sold, leaving 534 copies in hand. It is hardly likely, however, that the new French issue will have any appreciable effect on our sales

IMPERIAL BUREAU OF MYCOLOGY. HALF-YEARLY REPORT OF THE DIRECTOR FOR THE PERIOD ENDING 30TH SEPTEMBER, 1921.
Finance.-The annual income of the Bureau was estimated, at the time of the issue of the preceding report,* at £4,550. Since then a slight alteration has been made in the subscriptions of two of the smaller contributors. Jamaica, which provisionally agreed to contribute £125, has been obliged to reduce its subscription for the current year to £50, but it is hoped that the full amount will be forthcoming when the next contribution is due. On the other hand, Zanzibar has agreed to increase its contri- bution from £50 to £250, and to continue subscribing at the higher rate for the next two years. The normal income of the Bureau for the current year will thus be increased to £4,675. In addition to this, a cheque for £100 has been received from the Chamber of Agriculture of Mauritius; this sum is a gift to the Bureau, and the generosity of the Chamber of Agriculture is greatly appreciated. As regards the future, the Government of India has promised to contribute £600 next year, an increase of £350, and to consider the question of making a further contribution at that rate when the time comes. The income of the Bureau for the next financial year may therefore be put at £5,025.
Appendix I shows the actual receipts and expenditure on the Bureau account for the half-year. In addition to the ordinary expenditure, a further sum of £315 was voted for initial expenses on furniture, at the meeting of the Managing Com- mittee, on 20th June last. Of the total of £815 sanctioned up to date for initial equipment (apparatus, books, and furniture) a sum of £523 2s. 6d, has been expended, £202 38. 74d. of which was spent in the six months under review. The balance will be mainly required to meet the cost of herbarium and museum cases and furniture for the publishing office, which are being supplied by the Office of Works on recoverable account.
In Appendix II the general financial position of the Bureau is given. The expenditure during the first year of the Bureau's existence was less than may be anticipated in a normal year in the item salaries, as the full staff had not been recruited, but was greater in regard to certain special charges, namely, initial equipment in apparatus, books, and furniture, and cost of the Director's visit to America. Since the Bureau commenced work on 23rd September, 1920, the total expenditure (including these special non-recurring charges amounting to nearly £800) has been approximately £2,600. I estimated the cost of working the Bureau for the first year in which we had a full staff, exclusive of publication, at £2,375 (subsequently raised to £2,530), so that a great part of the non-recurring charges of the past year have been met by savings in salaries.
Staff-The full staff has now been recruited. Dr. G. R. Bishy, late a member of the staff of the Manitoba Agricultural College, Winnipeg, Canada, has been appointed Assistant (publications), and joined in October. In him we have secured an experienced mycologist and plant-pathologist, well known for his work on rusts and on potato diseases in America. He is keeping a lien on his appointment in. Canada for a year. Mr. E. W. Mason, M.A., Dipl. Ag. (Cantab.), M.Sc. (Birming, ham), has been appointed Assistant (systematic). His training has been such as should enable him to become a competent systematic mycologist in time, but he has
