He stated that this expenditure had already been incurred. The Committee approved the expenditure in question. Dr. Bagshawe then requested authority for the purchase of metal shelving to provide additional accommodation for books and journals and for storing bulletins, etc. The shelving was required in three rooms occupied by the Bureau, and (after inquiries from different firms) a quotation had been obtained by the Secretary of the Bureau, amounting in all to about £90. Sir William Leishman inquired whether there was any risk of the shelving rusting under the climatic conditions of this country. Dr. Balfour explained that the shelving was stove enamelled and extensively used in America, and he thought there need be no anxiety on this point. He added that the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine was also making inquiries at the present time in regard to the cost of metal shelving required by the School. The Chairman suggested that the Bureau's tender for the shelving might be combined with that of the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Dr. Balfour saw no objection to this proposal. The Committee agreed that this course should be adopted, and approved a limit of expenditure of £90 as regards the Bureau's requirements in this connexion. Dr. Bagshawe then referred to the furniture required for the new accommodation acquired by the Bureau, viz., one large table, two revolving chairs, two typing chairs, a typist's table and three ordinary chairs, also an office telephone. regards the last item, the Chairman raised the question whether a speaking tube would not be less expensive. Sir Havelock Charles inquired whether it was worth while to instal a telephone, if the Bureau was likely to move to new quarters in the near future. Dr. Balfour explained that any change of quarters would not take place for at least two years, and in these circumstances the Committee agreed that the cost of installing the telephone, viz., £4 108. Od., was not tinreasonable. Dr. Bagshawe explained that the Office of Works had been approached in regard to distempering and decorating the room, and the supply of the necessary floor covering, shelving, and furniture, but had advised the Bureau that it would not be. to their advantage to entrust these services to their agency. The Committee then approved an expenditure of a sum of £30 on furniture, including the cost of the telephone:

6. Dr. Bagshawe reported that the original arrangement with the Seamen's Hospital Society as regards the Bureau's Library, now housed with that of the London School of Tropical Medicine, had ceased when the Seamen's Hospital Society transferred the control of the School to the Board of Management of the recently incorporated London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. The Committee agreed that the management of the Library should continue under the modified arrangements made by Dr. Balfour.

7. The Secretary then read an abstract from an address read at the Inter- national Conference on Health Problems in Tropical America held at Kingston, Jamaica, from 23rd to 31st July, 1924, by Professor H. J. Nichols of the Army Medical School, Washington, congratulating the Editors of the Bulletin of the Tropical Diseases Bureau on the production of a most valuable work which met the necessity for bringing to a common focus the material scattered about in various publications on Tropical Medicine. (The extract in question was reported in Science, Volume LX, No. 1552, of the 26th of September, 1924, pages 279 to 282.)
