Research (1) Special research in conjunction with the Liverpool Port Sanitary authorities in the use of Hydrocyanic acid gas for the destruction of vermin on board ship has been carried out. The preliminary experiments were conducted in a specially constructed lethal chamber and subsequently on a large scale on board ship. Bugs, lice, and rat-fleas were subjected to the action of the gas under a number of different conditions, details of which will be published later. Under most of these the minimum 'lethal dose of the gas was determined, but further experiments are necessary to establish the minimum for insects placed under a certain set of conditions which prevails on board ship. It is hoped that the investi- gations will be completed in the course of a few weeks.
(2) Observations in the field and in the laboratory have been conducted with a view to confirming or disproving recent statements regarding the lethal action of the aquatic plant Chara on mosquito larvæ.
Speciographic (1) The morphological characters of Grunberg's type of both sexes of Glossina ziemanni as described by him in 1912 have been examined, and have been found to be identical with those of Glossina palpalis race fuscipes, New- stead. Glossina ziemanni, Grunberg, therefore falls as a synonym of the latter species.
(2) Collections of tsetse-flies and mosquitoes have been dealt with from the Belgian Congo and from New South Wales. Specimens of insects affecting from imported dried fruit have been submitted for determination by the Liverpool Port Sanitary Authority.
Instructions.-Dr. C. B. B. Reid has taken a special course of instruction on the bionomic and morphological aspects of tsetse-flies, beginning on 12th September, 1923.
