Downing Street, 20th May, 1915. IN continuation of my despatch of the 10th of May, I have the honour to transmit to you the enclosed copy of correspondence, from which you will observe that the Army Council gladly accept the gift of £2,250 suggested by the Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce and Exchange Committee, and will devote it to the con- struction of a fighter aeroplane, which will bear the name "Gibraltar."

2.

I have accordingly authorized the Crown Agents for the Colonies to transfer the sum of £2,250 from Gibraltar to Army funds.

3. I also desire to express to you my appreciation of the spirit of loyalty to His Majesty's Government evinced by the generous proposal of the people of Gibraltar expressed through the Chamber of Commerce and the Exchange Committee.

THE following further contributions have been received from the Gambia :— 1. £10, collected by the Head Chief of the district of Lower Niumi, in the Protectorate, for the National Relief Fund.

2. £6 68., collected in the Colony by Mr. J. A. N'Jai Gomez for the Overseas Club Aircraft Fund.

£5 108., a contribution from the Bathurst Turf Club to the National Relief Fund.

I AM directed by Mr. Secretary Harcourt to request you to inform the Army Council that the people of Gibraltar, as represented by the Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce and Exchange Committee, desire to contribute from the funds of the Colony a sum of £2,250 to His Majesty's Government for the purchase of a Vickers' gun biplane. On learning from the Army Council that they are prepared to accept this gift, Mr. Harcourt will authorize the Crown Agents for the Colonies to transfer the sum mentioned to War Office Funds.

War Office, London, S. W., 15th May, 1915. WITH reference to your letter of the 10th instant, I am commanded by the Army Council to inform you, for the information of the Secretary of State for the Colonies, that the patriotic offer, as therein conveyed, of the people of Gibraltar, as represented by the Gibraltar Chamber of Commerce and Exchange Committee, to provide this Department with £2,250 for the purchase of an aeroplane is accepted with pleasure.

I am to add that the Army Council propose to substitute for the Vickers' fighter aeroplane specified in your letter one of the latest type fighters designed and manufactured by the Royal Aircraft Factory, and which will have the name "Gibraltar" prominently marked in large letters thereon.

Government House, Accra, 22nd March, 1915.

IN continuation of my despatches of the 21st December* and the 6th February,t in which I remitted to you contributions from the inhabitants of the Gold Coast and its dependencies to the Prince of Wales's Fund, amounting to £8,744 12s. 6d. and £7,509 6s. Od., respectively, I have the honour to enclose, here- with, a draft on the Crown Agents for the Colonies for £4,400 and a draft, endorsed in your favour, on the Bank of British West Africa. Limited, for £4,434 12s. 6d.

2. The first of the above sums represents a portion of the collections made in the Eastern Province, and paid to the credit of the Gold Coast Imperial War Fund with the Treasurer at Accra. A detailed list of subscribers will be forwarded later. 3. The second sum (£4,484 12s. 6d.) has been remitted to me by the Committee of the Fund at Sekondi.

4. I shall be greatly obliged if you will cause these remittances, which aggre gate £8,834 12s. 6d., to be transmitted to the Treasurer of the Prince of Wales's Fund.

5. It will be noted that the remittances forwarded to you in this and in my previous despatches represent collections amounting in all to £20,088 118. Od. The subscription lists have not yet been finally closed, and there is reason to believe that a further substantial sum will ere long be available for remittance to you.
