REPORT OF THE FINANCE SUB-COMMITTEE OF THE IMPERIAL BUREAU OF ENTOMOLOGY. A MEETING of the Finance Sub-Committee was held on the 3rd of February to consider the application of the new scales of salary which were recommended for the Staff of the Bureau by the Imperial Entomological Conference; a scheme for a Provident Fund for the Staff of the Bureau; the publication of advertisements in the Bulletin and Review, and the publication of systematic papers on entomology in journals other than the publications of the Bureau.
2. The Sub-Committee approved the following salaries with effect from the 1st of April, 1921, subject to the addition in each case of the appropriate cost of living bonus, as sanctioned from time to time for members of the Civil Service in London :---
Appointment.
Name.
305
Since the Sub-Committee met, the vacancy for a lady secretary has been filled by the appointment of Miss L. B. Kennedy, with initial salary of £80 in the scale £80 by £7 108. to £120.
In considering the application of the new scales of salary, the Sub-Committee placed on record the following observations:-
(a) If the minimum of the new scale of salary exceeds the present salary of the post the minimum should be taken as the starting point in the new scale, unless there are special reasons for granting one or more increments at once. Such incre- ments should not be given merely in respect of length of service.
(b) The rate of increment for the Assistant Director is to be £50 per annum in the case of Dr. Neave, the present holder of the appointment. When a vacancy occurs in the appointment, the question of substituting an increment of £25 per annum, or some figure between £25 and £50, will be considered.
(c) Dr. Uvarof to retain present incremental date, viz., 25th June.
3. The Sub-Committee authorized the Director to inform Mr. H. Campion, who has for ten years held the appointment of Senior Clerk, that owing to ill- health his appointment must be terminated, and they decided as an act of grace that Mr. Campion should be paid a gratuity of £200 as a special case, which must not be regarded as forming a precedent.
4. Rules for the Provident Fund were approved, and by arrangement with the Crown Agents for the Colonies the scheme has been introduced with effect from the 1st of April, 1921. A copy of the Rules is attached to this report.
5. The Sub-Committee authorized the Director to enter into an agreement, for one year in the first instance, with Mr. F. Aldridge, for the collection of adver- tisements for publication in the Bulletin and the Review. The advertisements will be censored by the Director or the Assistant Director; they will be placed at the end of the Bulletin and the Review; and they will be paged separately, so that they can easily be dealt with when copies of these journals are being bound.
6. The Sub-Committee considered proposals made by the Director for the publication of systematic papers on entomology in journals other than the publica- tions of the Bureau, and they recommend that the Director should be authorized to expend up to £100 per annum on the publication of such papers at a cost not exceeding £4 per sheet of sixteen pages.
7. The covering approval of the Committee is required for the action reported in paragraphs 2, 3, 4, and 5, and their approval is asked for the arrangement recommended in paragraph 6.
